Secondhand Clothing Markets

An overview in Uganda and the United Republic of Tanzania

Secondhand clothing (SHC) markets can provide affordable clothing for consumers and economic opportunities for traders and retailers. At the same time, it is important that secondhand clothes are of good quality materials and trade is handled with transparency, with measures taken to ensure waste is minimised both at shipments and as part of retail operations in destination markets.

This research report investigates the market dynamics of the secondhand clothing trade in Uganda and the United Republic of Tanzania, two Least Developed Countries. Under this challenging economic context, individuals and families have limited disposable income, making affordability of products essential for consumers, who often resort to secondhand product markets.
