Challenges and opportunities for single-use plastic substitutes

Insights from Kenya

Plastic waste management is a growing challenge in Kenya – Plastic constitutes an estimated 10-12% of solid waste, roughly 966,000 tonnes per year. Plastic packaging and the food and beverage industry are the largest culprits of this waste. While Kenya has instituted several regulations concerning single-use plastic (SUP), as well as developing new regulations such as the extended Producer Responsibility Regulation, they are still facing several design and implementation challenges.

This factsheet summarises the findings from an UNCTAD report published in May 2022, Substitutes for Single-Use Plastics in Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia: Case studies from Bangladesh, Kenya and Nigeria, and covers details specific to Kenya on the regulatory landscape, trade opportunities and policy recommendations relating to SUPs.
