SMEP Research

In November 2020, SMEP launched two restricted procurement calls, focusing on Industrial Pollution in Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia: 

  • C_002: Development of detailed designs for future research: Prioritising pollution abatement intervention in the national context. 
  • C_003: Detailed Design for future SMEP intervention, Phase 1: Surfacing (private sector-led) opportunities for the practical application and scaling of pollution mitigation solutions in Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia.

SMEP Plastic Interventions

In May 2021, SMEP launched a call for addressing plastics pollution. The call remained open for seven weeks. 17 shortlisted applicants were invited to submit a full proposal, 10 of which were contracted for delivery. Please see more information on the plastics procurement page. 

SMEP Manufacturing Pollution Interventions

  • Piloting Technology solutions
  • Used Lead Acid Batteries

SMEP launched the first of its procurement calls under the manufacturing pollution stream piloting technology solutions that address manufacturing pollution in East Africa in July 2022. The procurement process for this SMEP intervention area has now been completed.  The SMEP team received ninety-two concepts at Stage 1: Call for Concepts. Seven concepts were shortlisted and invited to submit full proposals during Stage 2: Request for Proposal. After an extensive and rigorous evaluation process, five projects have been approved for funding. The contracting process for these projects has started and successful projects will be showcased on the SMEP website in due course.

SMEP Manufacturing Pollution Interventions

  • Textiles and apparel industry
SMEP subsequently focused on the textiles and apparel sector through launching a procurement call under the manufacturing pollution stream to identify solutions that are applicable to the textiles and apparel sector and that contribute to reducing or eliminating of manufacturing pollution and waste in Oct 2022. The procurement process for this SMEP intervention area has now been completed.  The SMEP team received seventy-three concepts at Stage 1: Call for Concepts. Eleven concepts were shortlisted and invited to submit full proposals during Stage 2: Request for Proposal. After an extensive and rigorous evaluation process, five projects have been approved for funding.
