On the Road to Nice: Better markets make better catches

In 2022, global fisheries and aquaculture hit a record 223.2 million tonnes – enough to supply every person on Earth with 28 kg of fish and seafood for a year (SOFIA, 2024).

But behind that volume are millions of livelihoods, many in developing countries that still lack the tools to access, navigate, or shape global seafood markets. Without transparent data, clear standards, and inclusive trade systems, growth risks leaving them behind – and putting ocean sustainability at risk.

Better markets make better catches

At the 5th UN Ocean Forum, FAO GLOBEFISH joined the Marine-based Products and Services (MAPS) Expo to show how better data and stronger coordination can support more reliable, equitable and sustainable seafood systems: from fishers to markets to consumers.

🎥 See how @FAO GLOBEFISH is boosting transparency in fisheries trade to make seafood markets more accessible, informed, and resilient, thereby contributing to the ever-pressing achievement of SGD 14.b.

The MAPS Expo was funded by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office – Research, Science and Technology and co-organised by UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD), The SMEP Programme and the UNCTAD Ocean Economy and Fisheries.
